Is hand sanitizer safer than soap and water?

Hand sanitizer offers 99% protection against unhealthy microbes, but proper hand washing is still important.

The alcohol content in hand sanitizer has the greatest effect on viruses, in that it denatures the protein in microbes, and kills them in seconds. But, properly washing your hands with soap and water is still the best way to kill germs. Even better, follow up with a 70% alcohol hand sanitizer.

If you’re out and about and don’t have access to soap and water, use your hand sanitizer to disinfect your hands.

Follow these guidelines from the FDA when sanitizing your hands:

  • Choose a hand sanitiser that has an alcohol content of at least 60%. The more alcohol that the sanitiser contains, the more effective it is.
  • Only purchase certified hand sanitiser from a reputable supplier.
  • Apply hand sanitizer rigorously and all over your hands.
  • Apply sanitiser onto the skin and surfaces at least every 30 minutes to one hour.

To help stop the spread of COVID-19 and new Omicron variant, it’s important to wash your hands with soap and water and use a 70% alcohol aerosol hand sanitizer, like OmniProtect Sanitizer Spray.
