Omicron – likely the most mutated virus scientists have ever seen

The Omicron variant has more than 50 mutations (at the time of writing) enhancing the virus’ ability to infect the body. Here’s what you need to know:

Alex Sigal, the virologist leading the team of researchers who first identified the new variant, says, “This is probably the most mutated virus we’d ever seen.”

The Omicron variant has more than 50 mutations – with over 30 in the spike protein – enhancing the virus’ ability to infect the body.

More research needs to be conducted to reveal whether the Omicron variant is more transmissible or evades immunity, as well as whether existing vaccines can stop Omicron. It’s important for the country to continue to get vaccinated, because current vaccines may still provide protection against severe illness and hospitalization.

To help stop the spread of COVID-19, it’s important to wash your hands with soap and water, and use a 70% alcohol aerosol hand sanitizer, like OmniProtect Sanitizer Spray.
