Symptoms of COVID-19 in children

When are you protected against COVID-19 after being vaccinated?

Children experience less severe symptoms of COVID-19 than adults do, which are mild and cold-like.

Watch out for these symptoms of COVID-19 in children:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Fever
  • Changes in the skin, such as discolored areas on the feet and hands
  • Chills
  • Cough that becomes productive
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, belly pain or diarrhea
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Muscle aches
  • Nasal congestion
  • Severe headache
  • Sore throat

The Mayo Clinic advises:

  • If your child has symptoms of COVID-19, call your family doctor.
  • Keep your child at home and away from others as much as possible, except to get medical care.
  • If possible, have your child use a separate bedroom and bathroom from family members.
  • Follow recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and your government regarding quarantine and isolation measures as appropriate.
  • If your child has COVID-19 and can be treated at home, focus on relieving their symptoms with rest, fluid intake and pain relievers.

To help prevent the spread of illness, use a 70% alcohol aerosol spray hand sanitizer, and always wash your hands with soap and water.
